California King Salmon Press Release September 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

There’s Still Time to Enjoy California King Salmon Through October!

As perfect grilling weather continues, wild-caught salmon is still available for locals to enjoy.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (September 8, 2021) – If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to treat yourself to local, wild-caught California King salmon this season, there is still time. Resuming after a short season break in late-August, fishermen are back at it this month, and local salmon lovers can still enjoy what many consider to be the best-tasting salmon in the world. A seasonal, West Coat favorite, the 2021 commercial salmon season had several breaks since its start in May, but fishing will resume in select Northern California areas this month through October.

“Although this year has been somewhat challenging with multiple breaks in the season, returns were decent considering the circumstances,” said David Goldenberg, Chief Executive Officer of the California Salmon Council. “In fact, as of July, we have reached around 1.6 million pounds of California salmon harvested, or nearly 150,000 fish.”

As milder fall grilling weather approaches, consumers can still seek out wild-caught King salmon at local grocery stores, fish markets, fine restaurants and farmers markets. Renowned for their firm texture, robust flavor and for containing higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids than other salmon varieties, California King salmon also provides consumers with a sustainable, responsible option.
